StayWell Health Management issues statement regarding University of California employee fraud case

ST. PAUL (MAY 14, 2010) StayWell Health Management has issued the following statement regarding the University of California (University) employee who was charged with fraud on May 11, 2010. StayWell is the health management partner for the University and as such, maintains the online health assessment.

“StayWell Health Management detected an identity theft scheme against the University of California system. StayWell promptly notified law enforcement and the University of California, and assisted with their investigations of the University of California employee accused of the fraud. This incident did not involve a breach of StayWell’s security system, which is designed to rigorously protect employee confidentiality. StayWell will continue its diligence in managing employee incentive programs to detect and prevent any potential fraud and abuse.”

According to court documents, the University employee charged with this crime fraudulently obtained personal information for other University employees, and used that data to create accounts on the StayWell web site and to complete health assessments on behalf of those individuals without their knowledge or consent.

After receiving an inquiry from a University employee who could not complete an online health assessment, StayWell detected a pattern indicating the potential for fraudulent collection of gift certificates. StayWell immediately began an internal investigation and reported that information to the University and to the appropriate legal authorities.
